President’s Welcome

Come along with Austin Opera and the Austin Opera Guild on a voyage across space and time through the magic of opera. We began the season with echoes of the Cold War with an edgy modern work, The Manchurian Candidate. Next up is Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman, with its doomed seaman, ghostly ship, and equally haunting music. Then Donizetti’s romp, The Daughter of the Regiment will lighten the dark days of January. Finally, Puccini’s Madam Butterfly will break your heart while enriching your soul.

The AO Guild fills in all the spaces before and between the opera productions with a plethora of opera-related or just plain fun activities. Whether you’re a new or returning member, allow yourself to be enticed into experiencing at least some of the events and activities offered to you as a Guild member this season.

Here are some of the highlights:

You’ll be invited to three educational enrichment events, held in intimate home settings, each featuring the director of one of the season’s operas. Listen to the directors describe their creative processes and share their insights, then ask those questions you’ve been wondering about–up close and personal.

You’ll also be invited to three members-only parties, also in the lovely homes of Guild members. Our Season 30 Kick-off Party is coming up very soon, on October 15th. It will be a costume party; guests are encouraged to come dressed as a character from an opera. Two more parties await your attendance after the Kick-off: Our Holiday Party on December 3rd and our Spring Awards Party on May 21st.

If you choose to be an Active Member of the Guild, you’ll be called upon to help with various events and activities that the Guild plans and orchestrates to raise funds for Austin Opera. The most lucrative of these is also one of the most successful fundraising events in Austin’s non-profit community: Our Annual Serenata Wine Dinner and Auction. On February 18th, 2017, Serenata will take the form of an elegant Art Deco-era black-and-white soirée. Like last year’s event, our 2017 event will include dancing after the dinner and auction conclude for those who want to continue the fun past 10:00 PM.

The Guild also plans three glamorous Opening Night Dinners. If you enjoy dressing up, dining, gabbing with other opera fans, and mingling with the artists, keep a watch out for your invitations!

In addition to these events, there will be numerous other opportunities to volunteer, including welcoming artists as they arrive in Austin, helping out at our opera boutique, offering opera education to Austin schools, planning and assisting at our guild events . . . you get the picture.

Joining the Guild and getting involved will enhance your opera experience and your social life. You’ll meet interesting people and make new friends, learn more about opera and our productions, and develop a sense of pride that you’ve played some part in helping AO grow and thrive. Have I convinced you to join? Here’s how:
