Welcome to Austin Opera’s 2019-2020 Season!

We’re thrilled to announce the exciting lineup for our 2019-2020 Season at the Long Center for the Performing Arts, as well as the launch of a new partnership with the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas at Austin.

We will open and close our trio of productions at the Long Center with two staples of the Italian opera repertory – Verdi’s Rigoletto and Puccini’s Turandot. These two traditionally staged productions will feature returning favorites – including Michael Chioldi and Peter Volpe – and the Austin Opera debuts of a cadre of brilliant artists – including Madison Leonard, winner of the 2018 Metropolitan Opera Competition, and Alexandra Loutsion, recently hailed for her “fearless” portrayal of Turandot by Opera News.

For our winter production we will transport you to the summit of Mount Everest in 1996, one of the deadliest years in the mountain’s history. Composer Joby Talbot and librettist Gene Scheer’s heart-breaking account of the perilous final journey of famed mountaineer Rob Hall is based on Jon Krakauer’s best-selling novel, Into Thin Air. This innovative production conceived by Dallas Opera places the orchestra on stage at the center of the drama and stars all three leads from the work’s premiere: Andrew Bidlack (Rob Hall), Craig Verm (Doug Hansen), and Kevin Burdette (Beck Weathers).

We’re also very proud to announce the launch of a formal partnership between Austin Opera and the Butler School of Music, beginning with the Butler Opera International Competition in September and continuing with our masterclass series throughout the season pairing Austin Opera stars with the talented young singers of the Butler School of Music. Guest lecturers from the Butler School’s musicology department will share their expert insights at our Opera Overtures and Sunday Brunch Series throughout the season, as well.

And there’s more! For our adventurous opera enthusiasts, the Opera ATX series will continue to offer new, immersive experiences with some of the most talented artists of our time. Stay tuned for the big reveal this coming April.
