The 2018-2019 season marks new beginnings and continued traditions at Austin Opera.
We start the season with Verdi’s Otello, which hasn’t been seen in Austin in 20 years. This grand return to the Austin Opera stage features fan favorites Issachah Savage in the title role, Marina Costa-Jackson as Desdemona, and Michael Chioldi as lago. The production will feature dramatic sets and costumes and a key role for our Austin Opera Chorus.
We end the season with Puccini’s La bohème, his classic tale about six young bohemians in the heart of Paris’s Latin Quarter – with Alison Moritz (The Manchurian Candidate, 2016) directing the young lovers in the traditional and opulent production from San Francisco Opera. With some of opera’s most famous melodies, this show is the perfect end to a fantastic season.
In heart of the season, Austin Opera performs two thrilling company premiers. The first is Silent Night, the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera from Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell, the creators of our acclaimed The Manchurian Candidate. This touching opera, based on the Academy Award-winning film Joyeux Noël, tells of the miracle of a singular moment of peace during a turbulent time of war; our performances mark 100 years since the end of World War I. A true ensemble piece sung in five languages, Silent Night will be unlike anything you’ve seen on the Long Center stage.
The second company premiere is part of Austin Opera’s bold new artistic initiative, Opera ATX, in which we will bring new works, sensational Artists, and visionary creative teams to unique venues all around town. Our inaugural production of Opera ATX is Soldier Songs, written by noted contemporary composer David T. Little. This multisensory work combines elements of opera, theater, rock music, and video to explore the reality of war in a unique storytelling style. We’re kicking off this new program by performing in the historic Paramount Theatre in the heart of downtown Austin, and we can’t wait to show you how Opera ATX will facilitate operatic innovation in our city.
