More on our Special Guest Artists:
David Portillo was a wonderful Steersman (in The Flying Dutchman), singing with clean, bracing confidence and acting with discretion and taste, once again confirming his status as one of the most reliable and versatile young singers on the Met roster.” (Opera News) Mr. Portillo has been a regular fixture at the Met, with celebrated performances as Tamino in The Magic Flute, Camille in The Merry Widow, Conte Almaviva in The Barber of Seville, and the Chevalier de la Force in Dialogues of the Carmelites, among other roles. His interpretation of Mozart and Rossini operas have brought his skill to many opera stages around the world including Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Dallas Opera, Deutsche Opera Berlin, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, UK’s Glyndebourne Festival, Opera Philadelphia, Opera Australia at the Sidney Opera House, and the Wiener Staatsoper. Recent seasons saw David’s debut with the Teatro Real in Madrid, Spain as Idamante in Mozart’s Idomeneo, a tour of Handel’s Ariodante with English Concert, and a successful debut with the Bayerrische Staatsoper Festival in Haydn’s Orlando Paladino. Mr. Portillo has been a collaborator in new opera, singing premier roles in Missy Mazzoli’s Breaking the Waves, Eduoardo in The Exterminating Angel, and Mr. Rodriguez in Tobias Picker’s Awakenings.

David was thrilled to return to his hometown of San Antonio, Texas last year for a role debut as Alfredo in La Traviata with OPERA San Antonio, as well as a solo orchestral program of Italian repertoire with the San Antonio Symphony under the baton of Sebastian Lang-Lessing. Orchestral engagements have included ensembles like the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, the New York Choral Society at Carnegie Hall, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, Bayerrische Rundfunk Orchester at the Salzburger Festspiele. Unfortunately canceled this upcoming season, David was slated to perform the title role of Roberto Devereux at the Met, a role debut of Lensky for Minnesota Opera, and a return to Bayerrische Staatsoper. Also, there would have been appearances in concert with Indianapolis Symphony and Kansas City Orchestra. During COVID, Mr. Portillo has been pleased to offer digital recordings for Tulsa Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and a performance of opera favorites for Lakes Area Music Festival in Brainerd, MN. He also live-streamed a solo art song recital for Valhalla Media Live with pianist Yasuko Oura.
