Fellow Travelers
Composed by Gregory Spears
Libretto by Greg Pierce
Based on the novel by Thomas Mallon
Love of country. Love of fellow man. Can they hold on to both?
It’s 1953, and the city of Washington D.C. crackles with suspicion of Red and Lavender. Recent college graduate Timothy Laughlin arrives eager to join the fight against communism, unaware that the city’s fear and secrecy will challenge all he believes and desires.
One afternoon, Tim meets dapper and handsome Hawkins Fuller, a State Department official whose conversation sparks an electric connection. Hawk helps Tim secure his first job, and the two begin a passionate, forbidden romance, navigating a world where whispers among colleagues and friends can end careers and lives. With investigations intensifying, a stirring tale of love, conviction, and a heart-rending betrayal emerges.
Timothy Myers leads the Austin Opera Orchestra in Gegory Spears’ “ravishing musical score,” Cincinnati Enquirer.
