Concerts at the Consulate

Austin Opera and the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin are thrilled to announce a new collaboration with the creation of a new performance series—Concerts at the Consulate—designed to spotlight Latinx composers and artists and celebrate Hispanic culture.

Renowned Mexican mezzo-soprano Claudia Chapa joins Austin Opera’s team as Artistic Curator of the new series. Concerts at the Consulate events will include musical performances, discussions of the artistic and social context of the program, programming for families and children, and the promotion of cultural and social organizations doing important work in Austin’s Latinx community.

ES: La Ópera de Austin y el Consulado General de México en Austin anuncian una nueva colaboración con una serie de conciertos. Conciertos en el Consulado destaca a compositores e intérpretes latinos y celebra la cultura hispana. La serie de conciertos gratuitos, curada por la renombrada mezzo-soprano mexicana y residente de Austin, Claudia Chapa, inicia con un concierto de la mezzo-soprano Stephanie Sanchez para conmemorar la Independencia de México. El concierto será filmado en el espacio de 26,000 pies cuadrados del Consulado General de México en ubicado en el boulevard Ben White del este de Austin y lanzado como concierto digital el 1 octubre de 2021. El concierto inaugural estará disponible en el sitio web y redes sociales de la Ópera de Austin, como parte de la plataforma digital Live from Indy Terrace, así como en las plataformas de transmisión del Consulado. Los eventos subsecuentes serán abiertos al público y estarán disponibles en línea.

EN: Austin Opera and the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin announce a new collaboration with the creation of a new performance series. Concerts at the Consulate will spotlight Latinx composers and performers and celebrate Hispanic culture. The free series, curated by the renowned Mexican mezzo-soprano and Austin resident Claudia Chapa, kicks off with a concert by mezzo-soprano Stephanie Sanchez celebrating Mexican Independence Day. The concert will be captured at the Consulate’s 26,000 square foot space on Ben White Boulevard in East Austin to be released as a digital concert on October 1, 2021. The inaugural concert will be available for streaming on Austin Opera’s website and social media channels as part of its Live from Indy Terrace digital platform and on the Consulate’s streaming platforms. Subsequent events will be open to the public and will be available online.

Enjoy the 2022-2023 Season Concerts at the Consulate and La Noche de Ópera event, featuring opera standards and art songs by Latinx composers performed by soprano Megan Pachecano and pianist James Maverick.

To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the event will be accompanied by a Folkloric Ballet Guzman, followed by a talk on the traditional Mexican clothing worn by the dancers by Mrs. Irma Copado. Guests can also enjoy an ongoing exhibit by Mexican artist Antonio Muñoz. Audience members are invited to the La Noche de Ópera reception with the artists immediately following the performance.

Austin Opera and the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin are honored to feature a concert by Afro-Dominican soprano Zuly Inirio and pianist Maimy Fong during Black History Month with songs celebrating culture, history, and love. Zuly is an acclaimed soloist throughout the US and Europe and is the founder of The Afro-Latinx Song & Opera Project and the Co-creator of Latina Women in Opera which celebrates and supports Latina and Latinx people in the opera community. In celebration of Dia de los Muertos, Austin Opera and the Consulate General of Mexico in Austin are delighted to feature a Mariachi concert by mezzo-soprano Vanessa Alonzo and Trio Chapultepec and the launch of Mariana Nuño’s new book, Dining with the Dead. Attendees will also have the opportunity to view the Consulate’s ofrenda in honor of the late Mexican composer Armando Manzanero and a display of Tzompantli by local artists with an introduction and explanation of the tradition by Claudia Montero.
