Job: Debra oversees all education department activities and strategies.

Debra Erck, Director of Education, is a National Board-Certified Teacher with 32 years of experience teaching music to children of all ages, 30 of those in Texas public schools.  She has been involved with Austin Opera for many years, including preparing the Children’s Chorus for several productions (Dead Man Walking, Turandot, Carmen & Tosca), as well as writing opera curriculum, running supertitles, assistant stage managing and presenting opera education programs.

Mrs. Erck’s extended training includes Kodaly Music Certification – Levels I, II & III, Cooperative Learning, Cognitive Coaching and Museum Education through the National Faculty/Smithsonian Institution Fellow program.  Along with the Austin Opera’s Children’s Chorus, she has directed a variety of choirs, including elementary students (Austin Children’s Choir, Hill Honor Choir & AISD All-City Choir) and secondary groups (UUMC Austin Youth Choir).

Along with her commitment to Austin Opera’s education programs, Debra teaches musicianship classes at Orpheus Music Academy and leads the Vintage Voices, a singing group at the Austin PARD Senior Activity Center.  She is also proud to serve on the board for the Austin Jazz Workshop.
