Martínez and Foglia’s Mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna continues our season this February. Embroidered with the ultimate symbol of migration, the Monarch butterfly, Cruzar follows the two families of Laurentino (Daniel Noyola), a Mexican man who has moved to the United States to work, even though that means leaving behind his wife Renata (Cassandra Zoé Velasco) and son Rafael. Decades later, being cared for by his American son Mark (Efraín Solís) and granddaughter Diana (Lily Guerrero), Laurentino questions his true meaning of ‘family’ and ‘home’ after a life straddling two cultures. Austin Opera’s Curator for Hispanic & Latinx Programming Claudia Chapa makes her role debut as Lupita.
This co-production features the unique sound of Trío Chapultepec with the full Austin Opera Orchestra in a new orchestration by David Hanlon. Cruzar la Cara de la Luna will be the first full-scale opera supported by the Butler Fund for Spanish Programming.
