This spring we are excited to once again partner with UT OLLI SAGE as we explore the cultural juggernaut, Bizet’s Carmen. Austin Opera Trustee and Associate Professor and Director of the John L. Warfield Center for African and African American Studies at the University of Texas Jennifer Wilks takes us on a whirlwind trip through the cultural history of one of the world’s most popular operas. Dr. Wilks’ new book Carmen in Diaspora: Adaptation, Race, and Opera’s Most Famous Character guides the conversation as we explore Carmen’s leap from the pages of a little-known French periodical into the classical music canon and beyond. The Austin Opera creative team for Carmen, General Director & CEO Annie Burridge, Chief Producing Officer Nathan DePoint, Sarah & Ernest Butler Music Director Timothy Myers, and Director Rebecca Herman, discuss bringing this masterpiece to stage here in Austin. Austin Opera Resident Stars, Spencer DesChenes and Kristin Bilodeau, sing excerpts from the opera to bring these historical and musical elements to life!
