Austin Opera 2019-2020 Updates

March 27, 2020

Dear Austin Opera Family,

As we proceed with sheltering-in-place in our community, we’re writing to share some ways in which we hope to stay connected in the coming weeks. Given how isolating and unsettling our current circumstances can be, we are committed to finding creative paths forward to offer art and kinship.

We are beyond grateful for the hundreds of you who have increased your support of the company by converting your outstanding tickets into donations. This outpouring of generosity is allowing us to issue partial compensation to the 130+ Austin Opera musicians and artists who have become unemployed due to these unprecedented cancellations. We will be sure to share their personal messages of gratitude with you in the coming weeks.

The following are ways we plan to be of service to you and our entire community in the coming weeks and months:

  1. Every Friday you can join us at 3:00 pm for our Live from Indy Terrace broadcast. This new virtual series features performances by an array of Austin Opera artists. While the broadcasts can be accessed at any time after their airing on our website, it is great fun to watch them together via social media, allowing a rare source of group interaction in these times. You can see local ABC coverage of the series here.
  2. Thanks to our innovative partners at Subvrsive, we will be able to pivot our Opera ATX production of Schubert’s Winter Journey to a film project that will make this poignant and powerful work of art available to a global audience. We expect the final cut to be made available this summer.
  3. In support of our educators and the thousands of students served by our company annually, we have made an extensive list of operatic learning resources available digitally. As schools began shutting down in Asia last month, requests for our materials began pouring in from all over the world. Our Austin Opera teaching artists are also standing at-the-ready to provide virtual lessons and coaching from their homes as educators let us know their needs.

While challenges undoubtedly lie ahead in the coming months, we have faith that together we will prevail. In the meantime, we send our most sincere wishes for your continued health and safety.

Warmest Regards,

Jeff Kodosky
